Dr. Preacher II

.
Another class closer to Dr Preacher.

Just completed Advanced Family And Marital Counseling. And just started my research project for my D-Min. It will be about a two year endeavor researching and writing about the effects of premarital counseling on divorce, and how a potential mentoring program for the church might help prepare engaged and newly wed couples for the issues that wreck many marriages. Prevention. Many ladies have worked out the minutest detail of their wedding by the time they enter adolescences; much less before some shlub asks “will you?” Yet, in all that planning of perfect dresses and seven tiered cakes, they neglect to plan for what to do when they face financial trouble, mother-in-law conflicts, and (shhhhh) sexual issues. (For him, consider the analogy of proper automotive maintenance: counseling likened to oil changes and tire rotation. i.e. preventative maintenance now is far less costly that repairs later!) However this analogy breaks down by gender, the point is the necessity of starting the marriage out right. Mentoring can help alleviate the troubles that married couples experience in those critical first five years.

The end will justify the time, energy, and effort that I will put into the task. But, please pray for me as I negotiate the aspects of writing a formal research project.

Another One Bites The Dust

.

I finished The Skilled Counselor today, leaving one more Counseling class for my Doctor of Ministry. Advanced Principles of Family Counseling starts in June. It will be nice to have a few weeks off before resuming classes.

In the Fall I will finally start the research and writing class. This will be the beginning of writing my Ministry Project, a slimmed down version of a dissertation.

Finally settled on a topic, “The Biblical Counseling Ministry Of The Local Church”

Sounds like a winner!

Dr Preacher

So with some changes in my schedule, I am taking The Skilled Helper this semester. One more class closer to “Dr Preacher.”  This class will be the last counseling class I will take, which s a bummer; but alas, I have now taken all that Luther Rice offers. The class is wonderful, probably the most helpful so far, although not the most revealing as far as new knowledge is concerned. That would definitely have been Counseling And The Law.

As before, I am posting some of my work a Biblical Turbulence. Perhaps one day I will stick with writing (i.e. having the time) to write some preliminary commentary stuff over there. (Basically a dumbed down commentary from my simplistic view of the texts that speak to me)

So anyway, that is the latest update on Dr Preacher.

Dr. Preacher?????????

.
I finished my final just a short while ago. Biblical Counseling and the Law is in my rear view mirror, but Advanced Biblical Exposition awaits next month. No rest for the proverbial weary, right?

I know what y’all are saying? Shouldn’t you be TEACHING Advanced Biblical Exposition. Possibly. But, alas I shall approach it with an open mind. Got the textbook list today and at least I own all the books already. One semester closer to Dr Leigh! That doesn’t sound right. How about Dr Steve? Nope that sounds like an afternoon TV Show. Let’s just stick to Preacher.

Hmmm, Dr Preacher?????????

Marriage For Dummies: Making It Work God’s Way

.

One of my classes for this summer is an advanced class on Biblical Counseling. So we had to “pretend” to write a sermon outline for Ephesians 5:21-33 and then define male headship and wifely submission. So here’s my stab at it:

Marriage For Dummies: Making It Work God’s Way

I. The Role Of Submission

Submission; Not Subservience (Just as Jesus was submissive to the Father, but ever equal with the Father, so the wife should submit to the husband, but remains equal)

21 Submitting to one another in the fear of God. 22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.

II. The Rule Of Sanctification

Servant-Leadership; Following The Savior’s Example

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.

III. The Responsibility Of Sacrifice

Sacrificial Love; Leading By Loving (Christ’s love for the church was so great He was willing to die for her. So husbands should put the welfare of wife and family first.)

28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."

IV. The Reciprocity Of Selflessness

Shared Respect; Seeing Christ IN Each Other

32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

"male headship": The husband is ordained by God to be the spiritual leader of the house and family. While it is possible for him to delegate authority to his wife, i.e. paying bills, disciplining the children, etc., he cannot delegate the responsibility. Ultimately, God holds the man responsible for the happiness and spiritual well being of the family.

"female submission" Submission should not be confused with subservience. The wife is to submit to her husband’s decisions, especially on matters that are spiritual in nature. She has a voice and should support her husband by freely advising him as a partner in the marriage and parenting. Ultimately; however, she should support her husband’s decisions.

Yep! That'd preach!
